Financial Accountability Information

At Compassion, we adhere to the highest standards of financial accountability. We commit to meeting the needs of children as efficiently as possible, and to using funds only for the purpose specified by the sponsor.

A Reputation for Efficiency

Compassion has been recognized by numerous publications and financial accountability groups, including:

  • Forbes "Giving Smartly" Charities 2001 Listing
  • The NonProfit Times' "Top 100 Revenues"
  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy's "Philanthropy 400"
  • The American Institute of Philanthropy's "Top Rated Charities"

In addition, Compassion is a member of several accrediting agencies including:

  • Evangelical Council For Financial Accountability (founding member)
  • Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance

Financial Accountability

Compassion's attention to financial credibility is ongoing. We use many safeguards to assure that money is spent wisely at every stage of our work:

  • Independent financial audits are conducted every year, and you may request a copy.
  • Our overseas offices must stand up to the same financial scrutiny as our Colorado Springs headquarters.
  • In addition, regular program audits evaluate the effectiveness of each of Compassion's evangelical church partners.

Financial Status at a Glance

Above all, we want our sponsors to understand exactly how their contributions are being used. The following charts offer a brief picture of Compassion's financial status:

Sponsors may visit their children at any time. They are allowed to talk with a child's pastor, center director, schoolteacher, and parents. Compassion sponsorship works! Thousands of children have "graduated" from the program as educated, caring, Christian young adults capable of supporting themselves and their families.

Your child sponsorship contribution to Compassion is tax-deductible in the United States. As a requirement of the 1993 Revenue Reconciliation Act, we verify that no goods or services of value are given to you for your contribution.

Please call (800) 336-7676 or e-mail us if you have any further questions about Compassion's commitment to financial accountability.
